Week 3 Facebook Business Page & Epic Fails

Facebook Business Page

Develop a Facebook Business Page. It can be a real business or an imaginary one. Add a cover image, profile image and several posts.

A lifestyle influencer showcasing images to inspire her audience. Not a store, more of a personal page.

‘Epic Fail’

Locate a news article that highlights a disastrous use of social media by a business.

Retailer Vera Bradley launches a “girly” campaign.

Why is this was an epic fail?

The responses the campaign ‘#itsgoodtobeagirl’ include the likes of;

  • “I get to wear skirts”
  • “Men pay for my drinks”
  • “Get to wear lipstick”
  • “Can marry money”
  • “Shoes”
  • “Makeup”
  • “Men can buy you presents”
  • “Frills”

This literally sets feminism back 100 years. The women that responded to this are obviously like minded people and the campaign just blew up. The company obviously didn’t expect this response and deemed the campaign a failure and pulled it from running across all media channels. A simple alteration to perhaps “girl power”, or “yeahthegirls” could have seen the campaign go viral for the right reasons, not the negative ones that did see it go viral.

Statement on how companies should be able to avoid this kind of mistake.

Research! Do your due diligence people. Put some feelers out there. Ask your friends, partners, parents, colleagues from different departments what they think first before your broad cast it to the world. Have a brain storming meeting in which you sit around a table of 15 and think of every possible thing someone can say to swing this the wrong way, to highlight something negative, controversial or offensive. In this modern age, everyone has an opinion and some topics are virtually taboo. Know when you are pushing the boundary of witty and just too much. The cost of going too far can be astronomical for not just a campaign on social media but for the entire business as a whole.
